Why do I need a standalone ECU?

Well, the fact is you may not!

It really depends on your goals for your vehicle and what vehicle you have. If you have a modern vehicle, and not wanting huge power sometimes the factory ECU will suffice.

An aftermarket ECU is usually a whole lot easier to tune and add sensors, which will add more engine protection and safety cut features usually also. (For example oil pressure cut).

If you have an older vehicle however then you will certainly gain with a Standalone ECU,

You will be able to add turbo/superchargers, flex-fuel, antilag, etc etc.

The options are almost endless.
